Forest fires are started by one of two causes – either natural causes or humans. Natural fires can be started by spontaneous combustion of dry fuels, such as sawdust and leaves. Human fires on the other hand maybe caused by a number of different reasons, some include: smoking, recreation, equipment and other miscellaneous actions. Human started forest fires top the list of how forest fires were started, but because they can be detected early they are usually contained easily. Natural fires could burn a forest for hour before anyone noticed resulting in more damage.
The primary natural cause is lightning strikes rather than spontaneous combustion.
