Electric stoves can be heated with either electric coils or infrared halogen lamps. The electric coils are simply resistors that force the electricity passing through to emit large amounts of heat. The halogen lamp works rather similarly with a filament. The resistor or halogen lamp is then hidden beneath the glass-ceramic top layer, which lets the infrared radiation through to heat the pot or pan.
