How do deep-sea sediment cores show past climate change?

Depending on the ocean floor sediment, scientists can analyze the content of these old sediments and tell past geological occurrences and what the oceans contained in that certain time period that climate change happened. Same is with ice cores taken from glacier ice that has air trapped inside, it shows the atmospheric content at that point in time that may coincide with climate change.
