Coral polyps divide into colonies, and these colonies can reproduce sexually and asexually. During sexual reproduction (coral spawning), polyps release both eggs and sperm into the water. Asexual reproduction occurs when pieces of the coral are broken off (fragmentation) during storm action; these pieces can survive, grow, and produce a new colony.
