How do conservationists decide which area to protect?

For the most part, areas with a lot of biodiversity–varied species of different animals, many kinds of plants, etc–are key spots to be protected, but factors such as endangered or threatened species also play a part. For example, sections of coral reef became protected due to the high number of damaged and dead coral reefs all over the Caribbean. Conservation is often, unfortunately, reactionary in nature, but environmentalists will protect anything they can get their hands on because all life in all forms is important.
