How do solar-coal hybrid plants work?

These plants work on the same principal as traditional coal or solar thermal plants, in that they produce heat, which vaporizes and pressurizes water and then passes through turbines, creating electricity. Solar thermal – as a clarification – does this by reflecting the suns rays to vaporize the water.
As permitting is proving to be a difficulty, solar thermal producers have found that (permit wise) it is much easier to simply add on their technology to existing coal plants, thus combing the two’s heat sources – and resulting in greater electricity production per consumed amount of coal.
