How do cities monitor the quality of their air?

Air monitoring stations are set up by state and local agencies. These stations may measure air quality within the city or nearby. When the air quality monitoring stations are not within the city itself, three or more stations can be used to generate a computer model to estimate the concentrations of pollutant within the city based on wind speeds, decay rate of the pollutants, and the concentrations found at the monitoring stations. Collecting air samples can be costly, so by using a computer model, the government can find out detailed information about an area with a network of strategically placed monitoring stations.
