The main factors in the decision of where to put landfills are economic sustainability, social acceptability, and environment.

Other factors include: “airport safety, floodplains, wetlands, fault areas, seismic impact zones, unstable areas, hydrocarbon wells and water wells, public water supplies, surface waters, surface water drainage areas, natural geology, air quality, endangered or threatened species, historical or achaeological areas, parks and recreation areas, forests, wilderness areas, wildlife management areas, natural areas, structure, residential areas, property line setbacks, aesthetics and visibility, local government regulations or solid waste management plans, and transportation factors.”
