The most common type of solar cell makes use of the photovoltaic effect.  Photovoltaic cells are composed of layers of silicone semiconductors.  When light from the sun passes ough the cell, some of its energy is absorbed.  This absorbed energy excites electrons, freeing them and creating an electrical charge.
