The most common type of solar cell makes use of the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic cells are composed of layers of silicone semiconductors in negative and positive pairs. When light from the sun passes through the cell, some of its energy is absorbed. This absorbed energy excites electrons to higher energy states. This frees them from their atoms and creates an electrical flow.
