How do carbon tariffs work?

A carbon tariff is the taxation of imported goods from polluting industries in nations or states that don’t regulate carbon dioxide emissions. A carbon tariff isn’t necessarily a tax, but it works like one, and is meant to give renewable anergy (a green alternative) an advantage over coal-burning energy.
