Telecommuting positions are often based on the amount of work a person does rather than how many hours they spend working. My mom telecommutes on most days, and she works very hard at it. Sometimes, she works well past 5:00 when most other employees log off. Since my mom is working a salaried position rather than an hourly position, she has a certain amount of work that she needs to complete by the end of the day regardless of how long it takes her. How much time a person spends logged into the system and how much activity they complete while they are online can also help an employer know how much the employee is working.
Telecommuting is a great way to reduce emissions from transportation. Encouraging employees to bicycle to work is another popular way that employers use to help the environment.
