A black hole forms when a star or other massive object in space collapses because of its own gravitational pull, leaving an infinitely dense object, a singularity. Every star will undergo a collapse of its core, but it must be very large to form a black hole. THe rest of the mass of the former star explodes outward in a phenomenon called supernova.
