This differs from species to species, so one answer is not really possible.
In a number of species such as penguins and red-winged blackbirds, it seems as though vocal recognition plays an important role in the reunion of mates. Animals, like humans, have uniques voices that can be recognized by their mates and this is how pairs of birds are able to find one another during mating season.
