How do bees fly with such small wings?

For many years entymologists did not understand the phenomenon of bee flight.  In 2005, however, a group of entymolgists discovered the aerodynamic technique which allows bees to fly despite their large mass and small wings.  Bees rotate their wings in short choppy strokes and reverse direction every stroke.  This creates a kind of vortex-effect which allows them to take flight.  Bees also beat their wings at an extraordinarily fast rate, as many as 450 times per second!
