How do bees breed?

There is one queen bee–there can be subqueens, but ignore this for now–which lays about 1,500 eggs per day. She is the only female that is fertile. The other female bees are worker bees. The male drones of the colony impregnate the queen and die after the impregnation.

Also, worker bees feed the larvae. This information is for honeybees, but, if I remember correctly, I’m pretty sure it’s common throughout other bees.

Also for an in depth look at the alarming collapse of our honey bee population check out Vanishing of the Bees, an insightful documentary. It goes into the industralized breeding for the queen bee and the general process of natural bee breeding.
