There are three types of barrier island migrations. The first type is Lateral Migration, where current erodes material upstream and collects material downstream. A second type is Prograding Migration, which occurs when either continental shelves rise, or sea level falls. Lastly, there is Transgressive Migration, which is the migration of an island back towards land. This occurs when there is a change in sea level or continental shifts.
