How do barnacles attach to ships if they are moving all the time?

Well, ships are not moving all the time — they often put in at harbors, where they are stationary. Also, barnacles can attach even to moving objects. They just need a large surface to anchor to that isn’t moving fast enough to knock them off before they can attach. Once they’ve attached, movement won’t dislodge them. This is why whales can also get barnacles.
