Through an aquifer recharge area. These are the places where water seeps into the aquifer, keeping it filled and able to supply water to an area, and as such are protected by the government from pollution and other hazards.

Some aquifers can also be refilled through indirect or direct ground water injection. An example is the Irvine Ranch Water District in Orange County, CA in the US. As part of their potable reuse program, waste water is treated then injected into the groundwater aquifer, thereby replenishing it and also acting as a buffer for encroaching salt-laden ocean water.
