How do appliances use power when they are plugged in?

When they are powered off but still plugged in, appliances are running on standby power, so that when turned on they will be able to function. This power can be as high as 20 watts.

Appliances are designed to conduct electricity from the wall into the circuits of the appliance. Many appliance continued to conduct some electricity away from the wall even when they are not on and actively using it. These “phantom loads” can be avoided by unplugging the appliance when it’s not in use.
