How do appliances still use electricity if they’re plugged in, but not even turned on?

Appliances still use electricity when they are off because of “phantom power loads,” which is basically the energy leaking out even when off. It is usually devices with a power adapter that drain the most energy, some common examples include phone charges, notebook power adapters, microwave ovens, game consoles, and dvd players. Up to 10% of a homes electricity is wasted on phantom energy, so make sure to unplug devices or use a smart power strip.
