Through something called Paleoclimatology, scientists can study the climate of Earth thousands and even millions of years ago. Temperatures for the most part have remained relatively stable, fluctuating only a few degrees over this time period; however scientists believe that about 800 years ago, between 1200 and 1300 AD, the Earth experienced a mini ice age in which temperature dropped nearly five degrees from the normal. This may not sound like much, but keep in mind that global warming has only changes the Earht’s temperature by about the same amount and look at the effects it is currently having.
