Plastics are assigned numbers 1-7, and it is believed that the most harmful are 3 & 7. The chemical make up differences range from density differences in polyethylene to differing physical properties such as polyvinyl.  This website provides a list of each number and its chemical make up; http://www.ides.com/resources/plastic-recycling-codes.asp.
