Large-scale interest began around the 1970s, as the price of oil skyrocketed and more and more people realized that something needed t obe done about resource management and sourcing.
Initially, however, people turned to petrochemicals as an alternative to deforestation-around the time of the Great Industrial revolution, it was clear that there were not enough trees to fuel industry, and an alternative needed to be sought.
