How did we find oil before we had all the technology we do now?

Oil seeps – places where natural oil reaches the surface on its own – pointed to underground locations where oil might be found. Once the science of geological trapping oil was understood, we could look at surface features such as anticlines and speculate that oil might be trapped underground. Technologically, oil wells were drilled by the Chinese and others as hand dug wells (just as water wells were dug), and by using cable tools – basically dropping a pointed weight down the hole to break the rock and to work its way slowly down.
