It really goes back to 1917 when Ernest Rutherford and his team of English physicists did an experiment where they collided two naturally occurring particles. They noticed that when they collided and the atom split that a proton was emitted with higher energy then the original particle. Hence he discovered that we could make power from splitting atoms.
