how did the transcontinental railroad make trade easier

The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad was a great technological feat for mankind and one that forever changed the lives of Americans. It was completed with the famous golden spike on May 10th 1869 and became the first live nationwide media event through the use of telegraph stations. Using this new Transcontinental Railroad “travel time from coast to coast had been reduced from six months to one week.” Both travel and trade no longer relied on wagon trains or stagecoaches. This meant that trade from one side of the country to the other was not only significantly faster, but more reliable and much safer.
