how did running buffalo clover get its name?

This endangered plant got its name based on the way it grows.  It shoots out runners along the surface of the ground that can then form new clusters of clover.   They also seemed to depend on the wild buffalo population to disturb the ground and occasionally disperse the seeds.  Due to the decline of the buffalo population and expansion of agricultural areas into the natural habitat of the clover, it is now an endangered plant.
