Back in the day, at the tender age of 12, I read her book the Sea Around Us, finding it an extraordinary read. By all acounts Rachel Carson was an excellent writer. And therein is the rub: she was an excellent writer, but not a very reliable researcher. As is the tendencies of too many activists, her zeal to solve problems tended to over-ride her dedication to objective truth. There is a new book out Silent Spring at 50, which takes a 20/20 look back at her observations and predictions. And the findings of that look back, much of what she wrote about was just not so. So with that in mind, perhaps the major contribution was in placing the environment in the limelight of the public conscience.
