The Portuguese government has pursued a very ambitious policy of diversifying the country’s energy mix, with a very strong focus on renewable energy. It is expected that nearly 45% of Portugal’s electricity will be powered by renewable sources, due in large part to significant advancements in the European nation’s land-based wind capabilities and rises in the purchase of electric cars.
One very significant factor aiding the rise of renewables in Portugal has been cost. Electricity rates in Europe are high to begin with, leading many European citizens and governments to prefer renewable energy to conventional fossil fuels.
