How did the Pacific Ocean get its name?

The Pacific Ocean was named by the famous navigator Ferdinand Magellan. He was a native of Portugal, but sailed for Spain, which agreed to support Magellan’s search for a western route to the Spice Islands through the southern tip of South America. The ocean was named as a result of Magellan’s fleet emerging into what Magellan described as a “beautiful, peaceful ocean”. “Pacifico” means “peaceful” in Spanish.
