The oil spill really hurt the economy on the Gulf Coast. Specifically, many in the fishing and tourism industries have seen their jobs put on hold, and BP is providing compensation for those affected.
As of today, oil and tar balls have washed up on the shores of every state bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Beaches have been temporarily closed and certain areas have been closed off to fishing. States such as Florida and Louisiana have a huge fishing industry, especially shell fish such as shrimp. The FDA is currently questioning whether some of the fish are safe to eat.
