How did the Monterey bay get so damaged?

The major source of pollution for the Monterey Bay area is water runoff. Storm and irrigation water from land contains traces of metal and other chemicals that enter the marine ecosystem along the coastline. Consistent growth in population has also raised concern over more runoff entering the bay area. Currently water samples are testing for chemicals and determining their source.
