Madagascar was probably settled between 200 and 500 A.D. People from southeast Asia arrived in outrigger sailing canoes. Also, people probably crossed the channel from Africa around the same time. Malagasy tradition traces their ancestors to Somalia.

The first settlers of Madagascar arrived by boat between 100-500 AD.  Interestingly enough, the settlers likely came from Asia, and not Africa. Written history of the unique island began in the 7th century by Arab traders.
