How did the government get away with injecting humans with plutonium to see the affects?

The Human Plutonium Injection Experiments were conducted during and after the Manhattan Project in the 1940’s. Not much was known about the harmful effects of radiation and heavy metals at the time, the purpose of these experiments was to learn more. The idea was, “If we are going to have thousands of workers in close proximity to these materials while making bombs, we need to know the side effects.” Thanks to these early experiments we now know the harmful effects in detail.

The government can get away with a lot of things that are illegal to normal citizens, especially in the name of research and the greater good.
