The classification of living things has a long tradition in human history. The system has its roots in Ancient Greece, when Aristotle began to classify everything in terms of “being.” He used words like “substance,” “genus,” and “species” which carried on into the more modern classification system of Carolus Linnaeus, a eighteenth century naturalist. Later his system developed into the current one we use to day based on evolutionary history and genetics.
