The word “chimpanzee” first appeared in English in 1738, coming from a Bantu language of Angola, Tshiluba. Their word was kivili-chimpenze, which means “mock-man” or ape.
The term chimpanzee is derived from a Tshiuba language term “kivili-cimpenze” which is the local name for the animal. The loose translation of the term is “mockman” or “ape”. The colloquialism “chimp” was most likely coined sometim during the late 1870s
