How did camels end up in rural Australia? If I moved there could I legally adopt one as a pet?

good question. camels were brought to australia in the 1800s by explorers who wanted to map the interior of australia which is the dry desert. many camels were brought to australia until their prices plummeted, and many were released into the wild. this caused many of them to become feral, and thus wild camels roam australia now. i couldn’t find any information on adopting one as a pet, but would suggest if you do move there to contact your local government officials as to the legality of such a pet.
