Boulder, Colorado became the nations first ‘Smart Grid’ city after receiving nearly $100 million in funding and technologies from Xcel Energies Inc, Colorado’s largest energy provider. The city was also ideal because it’s home to the University of Colorado and several federal institutions, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which already is involved in smart grid efforts for the federal government.
