The Egyptians lit Pharos Lighthouse with a giant torch. The top section of the lighthouse contained a dumbwaiter that allowed transportation of fuel up to the torch.
A mirror positioned at the top of the lighthouse directed the light of the torch in different directions. The lighthouse was the last of the ancient wonders of the world to be destroyed. Its remains were discovered in 1994, and their excavation was the subject of a Nova special. Some of the ruins are still underwater, and it is possible to go diving to see them.
