The depth of the Pacific Garbage Patch is unknown, as well as the exact size. The reason for this is that most of the content has been broken down into small pieces that are difficult or impossible to view from the deck of a boat, and even harder to view from space or from a plane. Scientists think that it is mainly particles of garbage that float just beneath the surface like confetti. It is estimated to be the size of Texas.
In an interview on David Letterman, a man studying the patch indicated that small particles of plastic can be found throughout the water column, from the surface to the floor of the ocean.
