Human eyes loose the ability to see in the ocean at around 850 meters of depth; although there is some sunlight that reaches this deep, it is not strong enough for a person to see. By 1,000 meters of depths even the most sensitive animal eyes cannot detect the light of the sun. Ocean water absorbs light in a much different way from air. That is why when you go under water, even a few feet, everything appears blue (blue light has a higher frequency and can penetrate further than other colors in the visible light spectrum).
