How deep do you have to dig to get coal?

Surface coal mining is used typically when the coal is no deeper then 60 meters (200 ft). Mining done deeper than this is usually done either by deep mining, or the so called open pit method. Deep mining is also used for any type of mining done beneath 300 meters (1000 ft). Coal thus can be found relatively near to the surface, but very deep as well.
