The average of both exploratory and producing crude oil wells in 2005 was 5,711 feet (1,741 meters). I believe this figure is limited to the United States, but couldn’t find out for sure (check out the graph: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_welldep_s1_a.htm).
The deepest man has ever drilled is 12,262 meters (40,230 ft) at the Kola Peninsula in Russia. However, this was a scientific project, not oil exploration (see first link).
