This is dependent on the type of plant. Trees have root depths of 24 inches and more, whereas annuals and bedding plants have the shallowest depth of around 4 to 5 inches. Xeriscape plants have root depths around 10 inches, while shrubs and perennials have root depths of 8 inches and more.
