It would depend on how deep the water table is in their area. Water wells typically range from 20 to 600 feet (180 m), but in some areas can go deeper than 3,000 feet (910 m).
Water wells vary greatly in depth as well as excavation process. Dug wells in particular can vary to anywhere between 10 and 30 feet (and are often deeper). It depends on how deep the groundwater table is and what process and resources are available. Obviously people further from a water source will have to dig deeper and for many people, it may become impractical. One must be careful because there are potential environmental impacts or water wells as well as potential water contamination from nearby land activities.
