There are three main types of oil rigs that drill for oil including the: Jackup oil rig, Semi-submersibles, and drillships. Jackup oil rigs are used in shallow water drilling and are typically used in water depths of 300 ft. or less. Semi-submersibles can drill in water depths of up to 8,000 ft and drillships drill for oil in water depths of 2,000 to over 10,000 feet deep.
