Good question, Shannon. There are actually a few different kinds of foundations for wind turbines offshore. The first, as you are picture, involves a foundation built that goes into the seafloor. This type of foundation is called a mono pile and usually goes down about 32-64 feet, depending on the conditions. The second, and most popular design, doesn’t go into the earth at all, but rests on top of the seafloor. This type of foundation is called a gravity foundation. The wind turbine is connected to this large platform and stays standing this way. There is another method called the tripod foundation, but it is not very popular.
