How come they can’t add a chemical or solution to the oil in the ocean that can solidify it and they can pick it up that way?

There are chemicals that can help solidify hydrocarbons, so far as I understand. I’m not expert, but there are naturally problems with using massive amounts of chemicals to treat oil spills. First, any chemical introduced to an enviornment at a large scale might end up hurting that environment.

The real issue is practicality in scale. Chemicals might be fine for small-scale spills, but it would be very difficult to have fleets of planes dropping chemicals over hundreds of miles.
