How is cobalt mined?

Cobalt is mined in open pit type mines and is mined as a compound, rather than a pure element.  Cobalt is generally not mined for alone, and tends to be a byproduct of nickel or copper mining.  The major cobalt producing countries are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Canada, Cuba, Australia, and Russia, while the US consumes 1/3 of the total worldwide product.
